I am Pregnant with Twins. Please Help!

With a blink of an eye, eight months passed. Poof! I was standing in the nursing home, embracing the twins of my cousin. The toddlers were as small as the size of my palm, and the happiness was out of this world. One just can’t describe the feeling!

As it was a pre-mature delivery, their health was of a bit of concern. Well, the babies grew with time and their health also improved, not to forget, with lots of love and affection towards each other.

Ever since I heard the news about her being expecting with twins, I read and learnt a lot many things about pre and post twin pregnancy. Through this article, I would be sharing some of the important information that I have found out about pregnancy with twins.

THE SIGNS OF TWIN PREGNANCY

Nausea and vomiting are found to be a major problem in moms-to-be with twins.Women pregnant with twins may also experience increased levels of the pregnancy hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG).

Twins can easily be discovered in the womb via ultrasound. When a doctor or midwife suspects a larger womb and examines it, he/she can easily detect if the pregnancy is with twins or not. During the ultra-sound, two gestational sacs or fetus are seen. It is observed that the backache, heartburn, shortness of breath, ankle swelling, etc., are worse in a twin pregnancy.

THE FACTORS

Pregnancy with twins occur in about 1 in 70 pregnancies. Family history, age, or the number of children you already have, are some of the important factors that increase the probability of having twins.

  • It has been observed and statistics have proved that women who are 30 or above are more likely to have pregnancy with twins.
  • It is the family history of the mother that increases the chances of twin pregnancy. In fact, it doesn’t matter if the father has twins in his family. So, moms-to-be, if your mother or sister has multiple babies, your chances of conceiving twins increase.
  • If you are one of those who is on a low-fat diet, especially on vegans, then the chances of having twins are less. On the other hand, if you are one of those who goes for the whole milk and loves to tuck on the steaks, then be ready for the twins. This happens as the females gain higher BMI. Thus, having a healthy body raises the chances of conceiving twins.
  • Twin pregnancy also depends on the number of children you have. So, more the children, more will be the chances of becoming a mom with twins.
  • Women in their 30s and 40s are more likely to have pregnancy with twins. It is because during this stage, the ovaries release more than one egg each month.IVF treatment also increases the probability of having more than one child.
  • THE FRATERNAL TWINS or THE ‘NON-IDENTICAL TWINS’
  • When two eggs are released at the same time and are fertilized by separate sperms that results in twin babies. When two eggs are released from two zygotes, the twins are called as ‘dizygotic’ or ‘biovular’ twins. The twins may be of the same sex or different sex, and the possibility is they may look similar or may look very different from each other.
  • Fraternal twins are genetically as similar as any set of ordinary siblings. These types of twins are more common when there is a family history of twins and the fertility drugs are used for pregnancy.

THE IDENTICAL TWINS

  • When one egg or zygote is fertilized by one sperm, but the embryo splits, resulting in two fetuses, that leads to pregnancy with identical twins. This is not considered as a hereditary trait, it’s rather a random and spontaneous event. Here, the zygote splits within two days of fertilization and develop separate placentas (chorion) and separate sacs (amnion). Genetically, the babies are identical and also share a single afterbirth.

CONJOINED TWINS

  • The zygote that splits extremely late and doesn’t split completely, results in conjoined twins, and occur in 1 in 100,000 births. These twins are also called Siamese twins and are identified during ultrasound. Conjoined twins share placentas and membranes and also share body parts and organs. Conjoined twins can be linked at any part of the body, but are joined at the same place.

SEMI IDENTICAL TWINS

  • Before becoming two embryos, when two sperm cells merge with a single egg, that generally results in semi identical twins. However, the embryo which is created this way usually doesn’t survive. It only shows up when two eggs have different genetic genders and the baby ends up with a mix of male and female gonads.

TAKING PRENATAL CARE

  • It becomes extremely important to ensure prenatal care for a healthy pregnancy. If you are carrying twins, you are asked for frequent checkups and testing. In case any complications are detected, they are required to be treated as soon as possible. Another foremost concern in twin pregnancy is taking adequate nutrition for twins. Moms-to-be are advised to increase the vitamins and minerals in their diet. Intake of folic acid and iron is also recommended to prevent neural tube defects and anaemia. Moms-to-be are also suggested to increase their intake of water to at least 8 glasses of water per day.
  • How much weight is appropriate during pregnancy with multiples, is another concern. It is generally suggested by the doctors that pregnant women with twin pregnancy often gain between 15 to 25 Kg over a period of nine months.

COMPLICATIONS

  • With twins in the womb, you are more likely to suffer from pregnancy-related complications, like high blood pressure, anaemia,  and too much fluid around the baby that leads to premature delivery. Also, the chances of miscarriage are higher in twin pregnancy as the risk of developing chromosomal abnormalities become high. In some cases, if one of the twins is miscarried, the chances are low that the other baby suffers any problem in survival. The great news is that majority of twins survive.
